King's is a community of people who learn from each other, are committed to its future and aspire to be better.

In this, the last Wyvern Review of the year, I am reproducing something I said a couple of years ago – it is still most relevant today:

So in looking forward, and especially at this time of year, I encourage you all to put aside any grievances that have festered through the year. One of the great strengths of Kingswomen and Kingsmen in community is just that – in community – in communion – with one another – a team – all those words you've used through the year and meant them. Together you are a powerful force to be reckoned with – divided you become a moderate rabble. Unity is strength and this place teaches you that on a daily basis - those who are leaving do so with experiences that will never be repeated, and with people who will be friends for life and a shared history. If, as you leave, and in a moment of reflection you know there are those you've treated poorly do something about it now – especially if you regret it.

If you are returning the same applies – take the opportunity in the few weeks remaining to mend some bridges before 2025 instead of burning some more. Trophies and successes mean naught at the end of the year if we've not grown personally and if we've not learned more about ourselves.

At another event at King's I once said the following and I still believe it and so I quote:

"In the present we are a College of intellectually gifted and emotionally intelligent women and men. It is a College which celebrates academic, sporting and cultural success in equal measure and students who respect one another and the beliefs of those around them (women and men) – where connection and camaraderie are respected and craved. It is a College where mistakes are still made but where remedies are found and apologies are given. It is not perfect nor will it ever be. It is a community of people who learn from each other, are committed to its future and aspire to be better – it is a college of high expectations.

And so I look forward – and I do so confident that we have learned from the mistakes and the successes of the past and have learned therefore from looking back. Going forward though requires personal reflection - it requires truth and it requires strength of character. It requires us to grow up.

Act on any regrets you may have – and then your year will be truly successful, and you will be truly fulfilled.”

Thank you all for all you have been to King's in 2024 and for all you have done for King's in 2024.

Best wishes.
