Statement in response to The Courier Mail article – 24 March 2025
Dear Members of the King's College Community
King's College takes the matters raised in the recent article published by The Courier Mail very seriously. The safety, wellbeing, and respect of our students and staff remain our highest priorities.
The article has raised serious concerns about aspects of student life at King's College. These claims are deeply disappointing, and we want to first and foremost acknowledge the importance of fostering a culture where students feel safe, respected, and supported. If any member of our community has had an experience that does not align with these values, we want to hear about it, and we will act.
This evening the President of the College Council, Kathleen Newcombe and I have agreed the College will be launching an immediate formal process to review the claims made and their validity. King's College has a zero-tolerance stance on drug use, binge drinking, and hazing, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to educating students about these issues and responding appropriately whenever required.
In 2023, King's College undertook a Cultural Review in partnership with Minter Ellison, alongside the development of our Strategic Plan 2024–2028. This was a proactive step to ensure that our community remains a place of belonging, responsibility, and excellence. The twelve recommendations from this review were fully adopted by the College Council and have since been implemented.
That is why it is particularly concerning that the allegations raised in the article were never brought to the College's attention through any of our established reporting channels. Our students and staff have multiple ways to report concerns, including:
• A Whistleblower Policy that allows for confidential and anonymous reporting with a clear investigation process.
• Speaking with a trained staff member and expressing their concerns.
• The Respect X platform, which provides a structured way for students and staff to make formal or informal complaints.
Despite these measures, we recognise that if anyone feels unheard, we must do more.
We would also like to emphasise the overwhelming reality of student life at King's: a diverse, supportive, and thriving community. At King's, we are not complacent and remain committed to learning, evolving, and ensuring that every student experiences a safe and enriching environment.
While we recognise that there is always room for continuous improvement, it is important to highlight that the overwhelming majority of our students feel safe and respected at King's College.
We remain dedicated to upholding the values of integrity, respect, and personal development within our College and will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students.
Yours sincerely
Greg Eddy
