King's College Firepit 2024
King's College Firepit 2024

As I toured the College this week, it was fantastic to see just how much academic activity there was, and is, around the College. Pleasing also was the show of support for the Women's AFL last night (congrats on the convincing win!).

In addition, I have also observed the new firepit being booked out almost every night. This has been a great addition to the College and I hope there is some great conversation and relationship building happening during these times.

I'll remind all Collegians of expectations around the examination and QUT SWOTVAC periods over the next few weeks. Please remember some students have exams right up until 22 June and Collegians should be respectful of others through this period. It is, as always, at the College's discretion to send Collegians home early if they have completed examinations but are not engaging in respectful behaviour particularly relating to noise.

Firepit Use

As many are aware, King's has installed a fire pit for Collegians to use. Whilst the current location is not where the Fire Pit will be placed long-term, I (along with the Associate Deans) would like to encourage its responsible use.

Please adhere to the following guidelines...

  • If you intend to use, you must seek permission from your RL. The RL group will ensure that it has not been 'double booked'. Once approved, kindling and fire lighters will be made available.
  • Seating can be obtained from the terrace but must be returned.
  • Firewood can be obtained from the orange wheelie bin at the base of the stairs outside CB.
  • Once finished, coals can be left burning but the fire must be 'handed over' to the night porter to monitor through the night.
  • On the day after its use, any unburnt wood or coals are to be deposited back into the wheelie bin for future use.
  • Use of the fire pit is for a max group of 15. If you want more people i.e. your flat, you must seek permission from the Deputy CEO.
  • This area is not for Thursday or Sunday pre's. Drinks are allowed here but the space is designed for conversation and relaxation - not noise.
  • In the event of an emergency, a hose reel is located on the edge of the terrace outside the JCR.

The longevity of this area will be determined by its responsible use over the coming months.

Please enjoy and I look forward to seeing photos of its use.

Holiday Stays

Collegians are encouraged to start thinking about their holiday movements. Cost to stay at King's over the break is $220 per week and the kitchen will be closed. Please note the following points....

  • Direct Key Phone Access will be turned off through the period.
  • Fobs will need to be returned by midday Saturday 15 June (UQ Students) and 22 June (QUT and other institutions).
  • If your fob is not returned, you will be charged the holiday fee.
  • Holiday stays need to be logged through the Student Portal. Details on how to do this are below.
  • All holiday stay info needs to be finalised by Wednesday 12 June.

Follow the link to the Student Portal https://portal.kings.uq.edu.au/StarRezPortalX

  • Log in using your email address and password – you can create a new password if needed by selecting Forgotten Password
  • Select the Menu Icon (top-left hand side)
  • Go to Self Service Portal and select Holiday Stay Request, then Save and Continue
  • Read the information provided before submitting your response to "Do you require holiday accommodation?"
  • If you select Yes, Proceed to next Step
