College Notice #2: Cyclone Alfred

College Notice 6th March
College Notice 6th March

In preparation for the landfall of Cyclone Alfred, the College is currently only open to Residents and Staff until at least 7.00am, Monday 10th March or when otherwise communicated.

Thank you to all Residents and Staff who have dedicated the last 48 hours to preparing the campus. For the 258 Residents who have chosen to stay on campus, King’s College remains a safe place during this weather event. We appreciate everyone’s efforts in ensuring our safety.

This morning, our Student Leaders met with me at 8:30 am, and the whole College gathered for a briefing at 9:00 am. Our College Executive Team is in close communication with the Critical Incident Management Team (CIMT) at UQ to ensure that we remain responsive to the weather event, always prioritising the health and safety of our Residents and Staff.

A few reminders for Residents:

  • Ensure spare bottles are filled with drinking water.
  • Understand the cycle of a cyclone. As it approaches, wind and rain will gradually intensify over several hours. A cyclone will sound like a roaring train or jet engine, and the sky will darken, turning day into night. You may be inside for many hours with strong winds and horizontal rain.
  • Stick to safe routes when traveling around the College. This means avoiding open outdoor areas. Stay close to buildings.
  • Look out for each other. If you need assistance, communicate with your Residential Leader, who will relay information to the College Executive Team.
  • Secure items on balconies, tape windows and zip-tie louvers where necessary.
  • Use buckets for any unexpected leaks to prevent internal damage.
  • Be aware of altered mealtimes in the coming days as previously communicated.
  • Minimise leaving the campus.
  • Urgent communications will be shared with Residents via the 2025 King’s College Facebook group

In the event of damage to rooms, emergency bedding has been prepared in the Chapel and Junior Common Room.

While the latest forecast suggests the cyclone will impact us on Friday afternoon, it's important to remember that Cyclone Alfred’s path could change at any time. Therefore, we have a range of contingencies in place to ensure we remain well-prepared for the coming days and well into next week.

Please stay calm and take care of each other. I also encourage you to stay informed through the following resources:

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates via email and King’s Connect as new information becomes available.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your Residential Leader or me directly.

Stay safe and take care.
