Rural Women's Scholarship

SUPPORTING A FIRST-YEAR FEMALE STUDENT FROM A RURAL SETTING

This scholarship is dedicated to helping female students from rural backgrounds who face unique challenges when transitioning to university life. It honors the vision of Thérèse Eddy, who, inspired by her own university experiences, wants to offer support to a young woman who might otherwise be unable to afford a residential college education.

Born in 1961 as the second of eight children to Bob and Judy Comerford in Dalby, Thérèse’s journey to university was shaped by financial constraints. When she enrolled at The University of New England, the Whitlam government had just abolished university fees, and college costs were covered by the Tertiary Education Assistance Scheme, which was means-tested. Although her parents could provide a small allowance, Thérèse supplemented her income by working in the College kitchen, in the external students' creche during holidays, and babysitting during term time. Even then, budgeting was essential—she remembers having to choose between going to the pub on either Friday or Saturday (never both) with only $5 in her pocket, which back then was enough for just two drinks.

With no car and limited transport options, Thérèse relied on lifts from friends and contributed to petrol costs. Clothing for special events was often borrowed or swapped. Despite these financial challenges, Thérèse looks back on her college days with fondness, recalling the lasting friendships and the fun she had—experiences that she deeply values to this day.

The scholarship was first awarded in 2025, and since then, it has been a source of encouragement and support for young women facing similar hurdles. We invite you to help us extend this opportunity to more first-year female students from rural communities, empowering them to pursue their education and create their own lasting memories.
