Careers & Employability |
In the Careers space, we have had a fantastic start to 2024!
The enthusiasm and motivation displayed by many of you in discussing your career goals has been truly inspiring, especially from our first-year students who wasted no time delving into career planning within the first few weeks of university.
I am delighted to see such action taking place. A successful career requires planning. One of my favourite quotes is from motivational speaker Zig Ziglar who wisely said, "Success occurs when opportunity meets preparation." Your journey to success starts now, and we're here to guide you every step of the way.
If you're eager to find work this year or simply want to explore career possibilities, don't hesitate to drop by the Learning Centre. Introduce yourself, and let's schedule a time to discuss your goals. It's never too early to start planning your career.
Did you know that King’s has a recruitment service that connects collegians with industry vacancies? Opportunities range from part-time positions for undergraduates to full-time graduate roles. To seize these chances, ensure your resume is up-to-date and ready to impress. For help creating a resume, or to polish up your existing one, reach out to me, and I'll gladly assist you. I am available to help with all things career related including career planning, interview preparation and LinkedIn assistance.
For those who prefer group sessions to a 1 on 1, mark your calendars for these Semester 1 workshops:
The workshops are a fantastic opportunity to get started on gaining a competitive edge in the job market. All sessions are held in the Grimmett Fulcher Boardroom on Level 3.
The King’s Advantage
A strong network of college alumni is at the core of many opportunities at King’s. A recent example of this occurred last week when a 2019 collegian (who graduated at the end of 2023) reached out for assistance finding a job. A classic example of ‘right time at the right place’, Charlie’s description of his dream job fit perfectly with a vacancy sent to me recently by an Old Collegian. Within 2 hours, an introduction was made with an interview agreed for next week. I'll let you know how it goes.
Law Careers Week - next week
If you are a student of Law, Justice, or Criminology, this week is for you so get involved 11-15 March. Engage in insightful discussions, attend informative sessions, and connect with professionals in the legal field. The highlight is the Cooper Foote Society for Law event on Tuesday 12 March from 6.30pm. The event features a panel discussion led by Daniel Byrne (King's 2003-2005), Senior Lawyer at Corrs Chambers Westgarth. The panel will share their experiences and advice on entering the legal profession and building a successful career.
The 2024 panel is His Honour Judge Ian Dearden - District Court of Queensland & Family Court of Queensland (King's 1974-77), Julia Egarr - Associate at Allens, Jennifer McVeigh - Principal at McVeigh Expert Determination (King's College Fellow) and Chris Erfurt - Special Counsel at Clayton Utz (King's 2003-2005). Following the panel session, enjoy time networking with Daniel, the panel members, other Old Collegians, and industry professionals.
What else should you attend during Law Careers Week?
Tuesday, March 12, 10:00 am – 11:00 am: How to become a Lawyer
You can't become a lawyer without it but what is PLT? Ann-Maree David from The College of Law QLD will share all the facts you need to know.
Tuesday, March 12, 5:30 pm – 6:15 pm: Law Student 101
What is working in the Law really like? Join Craig Chapman, Old Collegian and Partner and Head of Office at Dentons, the world's largest global law firm. This session is a relaxed but informative discussion in the JCR ahead of the Cooper Foote Society networking event.
Craig will debunk myths and breakdown misconceptions of the day-to-day reality of working in the profession. Suitable for anyone planning a legal career, all are welcome. The session will likely be particularly beneficial for first- and second-year students.
Thursday, March 14, 10:00 am – 11:00 am: Legal Placement Training Opportunities
Would you like to engage with real world learning opportunities as early as your first semester at university? Pro bono work is a great way to gain practical experience while studying. Pro bono legal services are vital to the community and are important in providing assistance for those who may not otherwise have access to justice.
Meet Rosalind Williams, Solicitor of 30 years and current ‘Practitioner in Residence’ at the UQ Pro Bono Centre to find out about how to get started. Everyone is welcome - you do not need to be a UQ student.
Thank you for your RSVP
To assist planning, please visit the KC 2024 Facebook page and select 'going' for the events you plan to attend. Doing so helps me to be sure the event space selected is suitable for the group attending. If you are attending Cooper Foote, a printed name tag will help you when networking.
A great start to the year I'm sure you will agree. I’m excited to be supporting you on your journey to a fulfilling and successful career!
See you in the LC!
