Involved across all parts of King’s, Charlie has already begun his professional career through internships and networking by utilising the career services available.

Charlie originally wanted to pursue architecture but did not love it entirely after completing some work experience. However, growing up on a small property in New South Wales, he naturally grew a passion for business and finance. The broadness of a degree in commerce has allowed him to tailor his studies to what he wants to pursue in the future. Charlie’s parents own businesses, so growing up he was surrounded by talk of finance and business. By selecting a major in finance, Charlie has been able to structure his degree to his interests.

At King’s, the Bachelor of Commerce is popular with many Kingsmen and Kingswomen involved in the tutorial program. This personally has been helpful for Charlie because there is help available from peers to check assignments or complete group assignments together.

Charlie thought to get a head start on his career by contacting Lynda Murphy, the Associate Director of Academic and Career Development at King’s. In 2022, he completed an unpaid media internship with Emerging Professionals in Infrastructure Queensland (EQIP) to start his professional career. This internship led him to another internship based on procurement because of networking. Charlie learnt about what it meant to be an employee of a company where communication and transparency are key. Currently, he has three jobs: retail assistant at Country Road, working for King’s doing the bin collection and as a Game Development Officer for the AFL.

Goals for his future surround being involved in sports, particularly the AFL and finance. The connections he has made through internships and jobs have been important to the steps he wants to take after finishing his degree at the end of 2024. He aspires to work in Melbourne for the AFL. This coming summer, Charlie is commencing a vacationer role at KPMG as an Audit and Assurance Officer. This eight-week full-time officer will include assisting with financial statements, performing data analysis and collaborating alongside experienced professionals to contribute to real-world projects at KPMG.

Advice Charlie would give to first-year students wanting to get a head start in the professional world is to send Lynda and message and organise a meeting as soon as you can.
