The 21st of March marked the conclusion of O-Week 2025, where 254 new freshers joined King's and took part in the annual O-week. From the 254 freshers, one in particular stood out: Tom Houlahan. Tom was awarded the Henry Jennings Award this year during the Fresher's Dinner on the last night of O-week.
The Henry Jennings Award is dedicated to the memory of old collegian Henry Jennings, who tragically passed away in 2021. It recognises a fresher who embodies the spirit of camaraderie, leadership, and enthusiasm within the college community.
This year's recipient was Tom Houluhan, a first-year student from Garah, NSW, studying a bachelor of agribusiness and agriscience at UQ.
Reflecting on his O-Week experience, Tom described it as 'something he had never experienced before' and advised future freshers to 'leave your ego at the door." Tom discussed his excitement for his third year and being able to give the 2027 freshers the same amazing experience.
When asked what he would improve about O-Week, he suggested incorporating more flat competitions to further strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood.
Tom said he did not expect the Henry Jennings Award, but after learning about Henry, he realised the impact of this award.
If he could give the award to another person, he said he would have given it to Fresher Kachow – Mack Hemming. Mack was the winner of the plank challenge in O-week, holding it for 51 minutes. Tom described this as “extraordinary, something you don't get to see every day – [which is] another thing the Henry Jennings Award should cover.”
For those considering King's, Tom advised against viewing it through the lens of a boarding school, emphasizing that it offers a completely different experience defined by camaraderie and a strong sense of community.
The Wyvern Review would like to congratulate Tom Houlahan on his award and thank him for sharing his O-Week experience.
