Coco leads our netball rise

Coco Smith shares her experience as the 2024 Netball Captain and her plans for 2025.
Coco Smith shares her experience as the 2024 Netball Captain and her plans for 2025.

Melbourne Resident and King's College 2025 Internal Affairs Executive, Coco Smith, has been dedicated this year to elevating the standard of netball at the College.

Originally from a basketball background, Coco began playing netball in 2013, inspired by her older sister, “I wanted to do everything that she did at that age”, Coco said that this was “the best change I have made yet.”

Like other tall girls growing up, Coco started playing as a goalkeeper, but as she got older, she switched to goal shooter, a position she continues to excel in today.

Her love for netball was further nurtured by her parents, the Victorian Netball League and the Sapphires here in QLD.

Beyond her contributions at King's netball, Coco has played for the Brisbane Wildcats in the Queensland Sapphire league and the Australian Christian University at University Nationals, where her team earned a spot in division one.

This year, Coco was appointed Netball Captain and helped pioneer a new club called the 'King's College Netball Club', all while coaching the King's ICC team.

The ICC team won the competition, which was the first time in history at King's. The club team had a great first year but unfortunately missed out on finals.

The King's College Netball Club plays weekly at the Western Districts Netball Association playing against legendary teams such as the Kenmore Bears and the Valleys.

In 2025, Coco and King's College plans to extend and strengthen the club netball team by bringing in some experienced coaches to elevate the team's performance. This year the team only had Residents, however, next year, there are plans to expand to include Associates in the team. They plan to get more girls involved with netball to make King's the college to go to if you play netball at a high level.

The Wyvern Review would like to thank Coco Smith for chatting about netball at King's in 2025.
