NotebookLM - the AI tool you should be using!

Powered by Google's Gemini AI, NotebookLM uses only your source material to help you condense or simplify study notes, and to create study summaries, mind maps, or audio/video reviews.

There are many types of AI tools and ways you can use them to support your study. UQ have an AI Student Hub to help guide you in many areas.

To put it simply - you should not be using AI to generate content to pass off as your own. Not only does it breach academic integrity policies, but it robs you of the opportunity for true learning.

A fantastic tool that you should be using is NotebookLM. This is a free platform, powered by Google's Gemini AI. It allows you to create a notebook for each subject, where you can upload PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, or Google Docs. Then, it will provide answers to the questions that you ask it, only based from the source material, giving reference to where it found the information.

So to set it up effectively, simply upload lecture slides, tutorial notes, PDF printouts from the ECP, and other sources from your readings list (up to 50 sources are allowed in the free platform). Then, you can use your new Notebook to:

  • Summarise the information, explain difficult concepts in simpler terms, or to generate a mindmap to visualise how ideas might be connected
  • Create study aids, such as quizzes with answer keys, or a list of potential essay questions to help prepare for exams
  • Brainstorming ideas, creating outlines, or giving ideas of potential themes that might be relevant to write about
  • Create audio or video overviews, which can explain the content in different ways
  • Create a study plan. Give a prompt asking for what study should be done for the week, given the time allocated and the assessments coming up

Clear ethical use guidelines

  • As NotebookLM does not use your personal data for future training, it is far more suitable to abide by relevant copyright laws than other AI platforms
  •  You should follow the rules on AI use outlined in your relevant course profiles, and acknowledge and reference its use if there is a requirement to do so
  • You cannot take any AI-generated outputs and claim them as your own writing. AI should be used to help your learning, rather than replace it

If you would like any further information on NotebookLM, or would like me to run a workshop to show its features, please reach out via email or Messenger.
