Introduction to Values

Our core values are the inner compass that guides every decision we make. Research shows that we experience greater life satisfaction and psychological wellbeing when we live aligned with our values.

Values alignment is a little like reducing the internal friction of doing things that feel "off." At university, when assignments, friendships, jobs or study plans clash with your values, it drains you.

Discovering your values gives you clarity and strength to say “yes” to what matters and “no” to what doesn’t. This doesn’t just reduce stress, but empowers you to design a life that fits who you are - academically, socially and personally.

Identify your values

A values list is a simple yet powerful tool to identify your core values and clarify what truly matters most to you.

Here's how to do it:

Start by reading through the below list of potential values (e.g., honesty, growth, creativity, security, freedom). Highlight any that immediately resonate.

Next, narrow this down by asking yourself: which of these feel essential for me to live a fulfilling life? Group similar ones together and prioritise the top five.

Finally, reflect on how these values show up in your daily decisions and whether your current life aligns with them. Done 🙂
