It was a pleasure to welcome back students for Semester Two on Sunday 23 July with a fantastic inclusive event on the McCulloch Watson Terrace. For some, it marked day one at King's and for others, the start of their final semester. I spoke with Collegians both resident and associate about my high expectations of them throughout semester two and wished them a safe and enjoyable time - where mateship should be enjoyed and developed.

I would like to draw to the attention to our current students a number of scholarships and bursaries available to them and available through our website. In particular, the Henry Jennings Scholarship which is made possible through the donations and support of Henry Jennings’ parents and Henry’s many friends.

Henry was a 3rd year student studying business at The University of Queensland while residing at King’s College from 2018 to 2020. Henry was tragically killed in January 2021 and Alison and Peter Jennings, along with Henry’s cohort, have put this scholarship in place to honour Henry.

Henry was everyone’s friend and a friend to everyone. He had a flair for making people happy, his smile was contagious. He was an easy natural leader with the uncanny ability of balancing social activities and his studies appearing to be taking life easy while at the same time passing exams, meeting deadlines while still making it all look easy. He was a mate, a confidante, a loyal friend and loved all sports.

This scholarship is to be awarded to a student who shows these amazing qualities.

Scholarship Criteria:

The Scholarship is to be awarded to a full-time 3rd year resident student at King’s College during their 3rd year.

The value of the scholarship is to be $5,000.

The Scholarship shall be offered annually by King’s College.

A candidate for the Scholarship must be a resident of the College and be a 3rd Year full-time student.

The Scholarship is to be awarded to the student who portrays the qualities Henry held dear:

  • Loyalty
  • Mateship
  • Party Spirit – capacity to bring people together
  • Natural unassuming style of leadership
  • Compassion
  • Sportsmanship and fair play

All applications for the Scholarship must be submitted to the Master on or before 22 September, either by the individual (with 2 referees) or by the peers of a proposed applicant.

Short listed candidates will be required at interview with the cohort of peers and Henry’s parents.
