From the Deputy CEO |
As I round out my first week as the new Deputy Master of King's College, I have paused to reflect on many observations and conversations I have had through the week. These include conversations with students, staff, contractors, fellows, student leaders, council members and representatives from our neighbour colleges here within the UQ precinct. Overwhelmingly, I have been filled with a sense of welcoming. In addition, I have come to realise the commitment that everyone has to the College, its reputation and our own individual pursuits that all come together to complete this community.
I'm reminded of the work of author/journalist/musician Mitchell David Albom.
“I used to be a classic workaholic, and after seeing how little work and career really mean when you reach the end of your life, I put a new emphasis on things I believe count more. These things include: family, friends, being part of a community, and appreciating the little joys of the average day.” – Mitch Albom
As I reflect on these words discerningly, acknowledging that many things come together to make a fulfilling life, it is a helpful reminder that our King's community strength lies within its student’s commitment to each other. Appreciating the 'little joys' - for me, it is stepping out to support our sports men and women as they compete. Or listing to our Band prepare for next week's Band Fest. Or acknowledging the study pressures in people's live and offering support and respect to this when needed. It's understanding those who we share residence with and offering encouragement, debate and challenge. It's a true realisation, that we are one community where lifelong friendships will flourish.
My challenge to you as King's College Collegians is to reflect on how you can serve and support community so that it continues to flourish and set the standard in this space. Below is an outline of some important upcoming events on our calendar and I would love to see you supporting these in your College Merch in support of your fellow collegians.
