Tuesday, March 12, 10:00 am – 11:00 am: How to become a Lawyer
You can't become a lawyer without it but what is PLT? Ann-Maree David from The College of Law QLD will share all the facts you need to know. Join Ann-Maree in the Grimmett Fulcher Boardroom, Level 3 Admin.
Tuesday, March 12, 5:30 pm – 6:15 pm: Law Student 101
What is working in the Law really like? Join Craig Chapman, Old Collegian and Partner and Head of Office at Dentons, the world's largest global law firm. This session is a relaxed but informative discussion in the JCR ahead of the Cooper Foote Society networking event.
Craig will debunk myths and breakdown misconceptions of the day-to-day reality of working in the profession. Suitable for anyone planning a legal career, all are welcome. The session will likely be particularly beneficial for first- and second-year students. Join Craig in the Junior Common Room (next to the cafe), L2 Admin.
Tuesday, March 12, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm: Cooper Foote Society for Law networking event
The event features a panel discussion led by Daniel Byrne (King's 2003-2005), Senior Lawyer at Corrs Chambers Westgarth. The panel will share their experiences and advice on entering the legal profession and building a successful career.
The 2024 panel is His Honour Judge Ian Dearden - District Court of Queensland & Family Court of Queensland (King's 1974-77), Julia Egarr - Associate at Allens, Jennifer McVeigh - Principal at McVeigh Expert Determination (King's College Fellow) and Chris Erfurt - Special Counsel at Clayton Utz (King's 2003-2005). Following the panel session, enjoy time networking with Daniel, the panel members, other Old Collegians, and industry professionals. Join us on the McCulloch Watson Terrace.
Thursday, March 14, 10:00 am – 11:00 am: Legal Placement Training Opportunities
Would you like to engage with real world learning opportunities as early as your first semester at university? Pro bono work is a great way to gain practical experience while studying. Pro bono legal services are vital to the community and are important in providing assistance for those who may not otherwise have access to justice.
Meet Rosalind Williams, Solicitor of 30 years and current ‘Practitioner in Residence’ at the UQ Pro Bono Centre to find out about how to get started. Everyone is welcome - you do not need to be a UQ student. Join Rosalind in the Grimmett Fulcher Boardroom, Level 3 Admin.
What is Careers Week?
Careers Week at King’s College is a week-long schedule of events focused on the career sectors most desirable to King’s women and men.
Exclusive to King’s, Careers Week is an opportunity to network with industry professionals and hiring managers in your chosen field. Through attendance at the scheduled workshops and presentations you will build industry specific knowledge that accelerates your journey towards career readiness.
Supported by the King’s Old Collegians’ Association (KOCA), Careers Week is also the perfect time to meet and mingle with former College residents and build an active professional network. A highlight of Law Careers Week is the Cooper Foote Society networking event.
